Dick Cheney Hunting Accident

Expanding our mandate just a smidgen, here's video of Vice President Dick Cheney lurking in the bushes behind Bush. And, naturally, scowling.

Via this we learn the VP Dick Cheney will be traveling to Australia and Japan this month. Whether he'll be bringing armaments along isn't known, but he will be making a side-trip to Tasmania to do some fly-fishing. Hang on to your hats! Better yet, wear body armor in case he decides to unleash a fussilade of barbed hooks into the air.

Is Dick Cheney a real hunter, or just a sociopath with a shotgun? That horrific choice is brought to us by Michelle Pilecki of the HuffPost. We're informed that the birds he shot yesterday weren't wild, but were raised specifically to be hunted, and were released just prior to the awful event. In other words, it was a "canned hunt".

It also links to 2003's "Cheney faces heat for 'canned hunt'" about his day at the same Rolling Rock Club. Out of 500 ringneck pheasants that were released, only 83 managed to escape, with Cheney himself being responsible for 70 of them.

This caused an angry missive from the Humane Society:

This wasn't a hunting ground. It was an open-air abattoir, and the vice president should be ashamed to have patronized this operation and then slaughtered so many animals... If the Vice President and his friends wanted to sharpen their shooting skills, they could have shot skeet or clay, not resorted to the slaughter of more than 400 creatures planted right in front of them as animated targets.

Vice president Dick Cheney is in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania today to engage in the hunting of poor, defenseless pheasants and mallard ducks. When I read the article and saw the phrase "Rolling Rock", the first thing I did was yell, "duck!" Then, I realized that that's not what he'll be drinking, but instead it's the Club he'll be visiting.

An avid hunter, Cheney is no stranger to Rolling Rock. He has made several trips to the club since 2002. During a 2003 trip to Rolling Rock, he bagged more than 70 pheasants and mallard ducks.

The hunt occured after his morning briefing, and whether he's doing it on company (i.e., our) time is unknown.

Enquiring minds want to know what a non-ambulatory deer is doing on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, home of vice president Dick Cheney. Was he engaging in a bit of out-of-season hunting? Was he trying to hit someone else, and hit the deer by mistake? No word yet on the injuries suffered by the animal. Developing...

Vice president Dick Cheney is currently in the Tallahassee, Florida area shooting at an unknown species of animals. It is unknown at this time if alligators, manatees, or "two-leggers" are on the menu.

The freeway in the area was briefly shut down both for the protection of Cheney as well presumably for the security of other drivers. He will be there until Wednesday, and has so far not shot anyone.

Vice President Dick Cheney's first hunting trip since shooting Harry Whittington in the face on February 11, 2006 will take place this coming Tuesday, November 7. That, of course, is the day of the midterm elections.

The trip will be at a private hunting lodge outside Pierre, South Dakota. It's at least his fourth trip to the state do go hunting; in 2003 he'd already made three trips.

He'll apparently be hunting the rink-necked pheasant, which is SD's state bird. While closely related to quail, they are not as tall and no pheasants have ever been known to be elderly lawyers. Whether any Democrats were invited on the trip is not known.

November 11 UPDATE: At this point it's clear that Cheney didn't have another hunting accident. Either that, or the coverup this time was better.

What is Reuters trying to tell us?

According to a new poll (PDF file), 76% say it's "Understandable it could happen", and only 20% say there was "no excuse for it to happen".

Only 18% view vice president Dick Cheney favorably; 46% say unfavorable.

There's a 46% split on Cheney's explanation for the delay in reporting the hunting accident.

And, two-thirds say there was too much media coverage. Well, I'm sorry.
